Faster Customs Procedures: AFIP Advances in Digitization
In its effort to modernize and streamline customs processes, the Federal Administration of Public Revenues (AFIP) has taken a significant step towards the digitalization of foreign trade procedures. With the implementation of General Resolution 5557/2024, published on September 2, 2024 in the Official Gazette, customs users will now be able to electronically manage files related to challenges to the valuation of goods made by the Customs General Directorate (DGA).
Previously, these procedures were carried out exclusively in paper format, which generated delays and a considerable administrative burden for both taxpayers and customs personnel. The transition to a digital system not only optimizes the use of physical space by reducing the need to store large volumes of documents, but also speeds up administrative processes, facilitating the viewing and tracking of files without the need to travel to the DGA offices.
The new digital procedure, although initially optional, represents a considerable improvement in the efficiency of the customs system. In this first stage, it will apply only to cases in which the DGA contests the valuation of the merchandise reported by the taxpayer when carrying out a foreign trade operation. Taxpayers will be able to follow the progress of their files virtually, receiving the information at their electronic tax domicile.
This advance is part of a broader AFIP plan to review and update the records, vouchers, obligations and information regimes that were implemented in previous administrations and that, in some cases, could be obstructing the agility of the processes or increasing operating costs. The digitalization of customs procedures not only promotes greater efficiency, but also reinforces the agency’s commitment to the modernization of Argentine foreign trade.
